Latest certification for high-end Chromebooks; Google has unveiled Chromebook Plus, a new certification that aims to make it easier for customers to find and purchase Chromebooks of the highest caliber. The Chromebook Plus designation will be given to laptops that fulfill a set of minimal specifications, much as Intel’s Evo program for Windows PCs. The goal is that even a consumer who is unfamiliar with PC specifications may see the name “Chromebook Plus” on a device and know that Google approves of it.
Interestingly, battery life isn’t present in this. In Google’s news statement, the term “battery life” does not even once occur. Curious! I enquired about this and received the following response from Google spokesperson Peter Du: “Based on internal testing criteria, all Chromebooks must satisfy a 10 hour battery life requirement. Chromebook Plus machines must comply with this, even though it’s not a brand-new criteria like the 1080p screen or 8GB of RAM.
I guess, I mean. What are the internal testing standards? I’d love to know. Whatever the case, considering that Chromebooks are typically seen as portable devices, I have to ask why battery life wasn’t given any form of precedence here. Battery life has a significant impact on a product’s suitability as an on-the-go driver.
Some (but not all) of the special AI-powered capabilities that will be available to Chromebooks with the Plus certification were showcased at a press event last week. These include Offline File Sync (which automatically downloads files from Drive onto your device — something I’d be nervous about considering the sheer volume of files I have stored on Drive), improvements to lighting and noise cancellation in video conferencing, and a magic eraser tool in Google Photos that can automatically remove background elements. More high-tech items are on the horizon, such as “a personal writing assistant,” which sounds really interesting, and AI-generated wallpapers that you can design with text suggestions. Additionally, three months of GeForce Now’s priority tier and a three-month Photoshop on the Web subscription are included with Chromebook Plus devices. (Stadia, RIP.)
